Step 1: Choose a suitable location for the enclosure.
Consider how much sunlight and shade your new tortoise enclosure will get, how close it is to any neighbors or other animals that may cause harm to your tortoise, and how easy it will be to access the enclosure from your home.
A good place for your tortoise should include plenty of sunlight, shade, and shelter from the elements. Depending on where you live, you should consider how hot or cold it gets in the area. If the weather isn’t suitable for your tortoise, you may need to invest in a heat lamp or other heating equipment.
So, find a place outdoors with plenty of sunlight, some shaded areas, and shelter from the wind and other elements.
Step 2: Measure out how big the enclosure should be.
The size of the enclosure you need will depend on how many tortoises you plan to keep and how much space they are likely to take up. For one adult tortoise, a minimum of 10 square feet is recommended, but bigger enclosures are better if possible.
When working with the outdoor elements, bigger is always better. This will give your tortoise plenty of space to explore and roam without feeling cramped. The whole point of an outdoor enclosure is to provide your pet tortoise with an environment similar to its natural habitat, so it’s important to give them plenty of space.

The pond measurements need to be suitable for the size of your tortoise – I used a shallow, kiddie pool to provide my tortoise with plenty of room to rest and relax in the water. Yet again, make sure the pond is securely fastened to the ground so your tortoise can’t move around.
By adding various enrichment items, I found that my tortoise was more active and engaged in its surroundings. Other small items I added to help enrich the environment were fake plants, tunnels, and toys. I found that these items entertained my tortoise and provided it with additional stimulation.
Step 7: Make sure the enclosure is secure and predator-proof.
Ensure the fencing is secure enough that predators cannot enter and that there are no gaps that your tortoise can escape through. It’s also important to ensure that gates or doors are secure so your tortoise can’t get out.
Suppose you live in an area with predators. In that case, it’s also a good idea to add an extra layer of protection, such as bird netting or electric fencing. This will help ensure the safety of your tortoise and keep predators away.
By ensuring the enclosure was secure and predator-proof, I could rest assured that my tortoise was safe and secure from harm. It also gave me peace of mind knowing that my pet couldn’t escape or get injured in the enclosure.
